Whenever I write about the lack of third-party HD-DVRs, I inevitably receive a slew of email gently pointing me to the HD TiVo, a device DirecTV (the aforementioned benevolent dictatorship) so kindly offers.
The SXRD has a cable card slot, but I have it connected via a HD-DVR box from Comcast.
Wagner doesn't own a stake in HDNet--"There are applications for HD, of course, but it doesn't drive the train of things I'm doing"--though he sounds like someone who has gone native.
So I went and checked out Toshiba's HD-DVD roadshow here in Dallas yesterday to see the new next-gen format, and got to ask the rep some questions that had been unanswered by your fine Podcast and the media in general.
I've been less than impressed with TNT-HD's quality as of late, so this is their chance to redeem themselves.
This isn't a normal CE DVD player here. (i.e. think Toshiba's first-gen HD DVD player but only bigger) It weighs in at an impressive 17lbs and seems to be built solid.
The kicker here though is: as much as I like this unit, I'll feel badly for the owners of this big guy when HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray disks come around.
So far I have been enjoying H.264, XviD, DivX and MPEG-2 HD clips.
But my point is that the current action smacks of the fast-money types rotating out of stocks like Rovi Corp ( ROVI) and Apple ( AAPL) (both of which I own in portfolios I manage) and into the former yawners such as Home Depot ( HD) and Wal-Mart ( WMT).
But here I am watching CNN on a nice 42-inch plasma and the signal is not in HD.
