Speaking at the Ninth High-Level Group meeting on Education for All (EFA) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Irina Bokova called on governments and donors to redouble their efforts to protect educational gains made over the past decade that are under threat from the global economic downturn.
Participants at the High Level Group meeting on Education for All (EFA), organized by UNESCO and the Government of Norway, today urgently called on national governments to allocate at least four to six per cent of GNP and 15 to 20 per cent of public expenditure to education.
Speaking at the Ninth High-Level Group meeting on Education for All (EFA) in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Ms Bokova lauded the accomplishments of the Education For All (EFA) campaign - including the fact that in Africa 42 million more children are enrolled in primary school this year than in 2000 - but said that the economic recession had caused some governments to cut back on education funding.
On Monday morning, the Secretary-General was briefed again by his High-level Advisory Group on Sustainable Energy for All.
According to research also carried out by the corporate governance advisory group, Manifest, the average level of dissent registered in all explicit votes on remuneration was 11.7% - which was up from 9.6% in the previous year, but significantly below the dissent levels of 16% and 12.4% seen in 2002 and 2003 respectively.
In that regard, we received the Interim Report of the High Level Working Group on Jobs and Growth, and welcomed the Group's thorough assessment of all the options to achieve that objective.
