The major principles of the pact are drawn from international law, science, philosophy, religion, recent United Nations summit meetings and an international dialogue on global ethics generated at the conference and elsewhere.
As Director of the Division of Ethics of Science and Technology of UNESCO from 2003 to 2010, I have seen a growing demand in this area starting with the governments themselves, since it was at the initiative of UNESCO Member States that a global Ethics Education Program was created in 2004.
My many initiatives and collaborations encompass innovative educational outreach approaches to art and zoological history, ecological anthropology and aesthetics, the history of ideas, exploration, environmental psychology, comparative literature, philosophy and ethics, global biodiversity field research, systematics, deep demography and animal rights.
In addition, there was no platform to exchange information and experiences about ethics education at the global level.
From that time on, I felt the need for a more continuing scholarly platform that was not only really global but that could also promote ethics education as a serious scholarly issue, open for research and publications in order to improve the quality of ethics education around the world.
Employers, who have in the past pushed schools to add more hands-on training and global coursework, could successfully agitate for more ethics instruction.

Key themes of SD in the region include among other things poverty alleviation, citizenship, peace, ethics, responsibility in local and global contexts, democracy and governance, justice, security, human rights, health, gender equity, cultural diversity, rural and urban development, economy, production and consumption patterns, corporate social responsibility, environmental protection, climate change, prevention and adaptation, natural resource management, biological and landscape diversity.
