Director John Landis described Harryhausen as a "true giant of the cinema" and said his creations were "not only the stars of those movies, but the main reason for those movies to exist at all".
As I wrote a few months ago elsewhere, one of the big differences between Jack the Giant Slayer and Oz: The Great and Powerful was that the latter Disney concoction had actual movie stars.
That is because the two smaller stars orbit each other in 0.9 days, whereas the expected period of oscillations from the red giant's rumblings is almost exactly half that.
