The main objectives of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2003, are to safeguard intangible cultural heritage, to ensure respect for it, to raise awareness about its importance and to provide for international cooperation in these fields.

In his presentation during the opening session, Mr. Proschan explained in detail the strategy developed by UNESCO to strengthen national capacities for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage in general, and in particular, the regional workshops taught since January 2011 in several regions, including the workshop in Havana.

Observing that younger generations in modern societies may have difficulties in understanding the values and significance of intangible cultural heritage, the Director-General noted that in traditional societies, where information from outside was limited and young people acquired new knowledge primarily from older people in their communities, intangible cultural heritage was naturally and directly transmitted from generation to generation through their daily activities.
