The FBI said 21 of the 24 exchanging emails and chats were engaging in "fantasy role play, " Ms. Gatto said.
Gatto tried to show that Valle provided false information about the alleged targets' locations to some people he chatted with online.

"The jury was unable to get past the thoughts, " Gatto said.

"Obviously this case involved thoughts that were unusual and bizarre and frankly very ugly, " said Ms. Gatto, who said she would appeal the verdict if she can't get it set aside.
