At the time there was worldwide admiration for the bravery of the "Fukushima 50" - the selfless workers who agreed to stay behind to work in the most dangerous parts of the complex.
The number of workers grappling with an increasingly likely nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan has been cut from 800 to 50.
Japanese officials have said the plutonium would strictly be used for power generation, even as just two of Japan's 50 power reactors are running because of the safety concerns raised by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident.
