"This flu season has been worse than average and particularly severe for the elderly, " Frieden said.
"We know that it's not nearly as much as we would have liked, " Frieden said.
"We do these messages, we do these campaigns for one simple reason -- they work, " Frieden said.
"We simply need a better vaccine against influenza, one that works better and lasts longer, " Frieden said.
"It's a worse than average (flu) season, and it's a bad year for the elderly, " Frieden said.
In an interview published on Sunday, Luc Frieden said he wanted to "strengthen co-operation with foreign tax authorities".

Frieden said the H1N1 virus -- which he said never really went away, judging by the cases reported this summer -- is spreading in the United States, particularly in the Southeast.

"It seems that this year's flu vaccine is not nearly as effective as we would like among people over the age of 65 for one particular strain of flu, " Frieden said Thursday.
The Bachus bill appeals to states because, although it would not require a single tax rate in jurisdictions within a state, it would authorize states themselves to set a single rate, Frieden said.
Of the estimated 23, 000 annual deaths attributed to excessive alcohol use among women and girls, binge drinking was responsible for more than half of those deaths, said Frieden.
But Bachus' bill and the others face strong opposition from members of Congress who oppose any tax law changes that might jeopardize the growth of e-commerce, said Frieden, who believes that none of the bills debated at the hearing are likely to pass this year.
