Petro-Canada's chief Ron A. Brenneman declined to comment on Total's potential involvement in the Fort Hills project.
The big prize here is a 20% stake in the Fort Hills oil sands project, an open-pit mining operation targeting 3.4 billion barrels of bitumen.

Total said in a statement today that the terms of the deal mean its getting its 680 million-barrel share of Fort Hills for roughly 62 cents a barrel.
The first phase of Fort Hills will produce 160, 000 bpd.
Oil sands observers think Total wants Fort Hills bad enough that it will pay up to buy out both UTS' and Teck Cominco's stakes in order to partner with Petro-Canada one-on-one.
