The final straw was his refusal to condemn the withdrawal of a loan for the city's Forgemasters steel company which had been promised under the Labour government.
Mr Cable told the Business and Innovation Committee said he could not account for why some loans got the go-ahead whereas others - such as Sheffield Forgemasters - did not.
