More evocative is the Gatsby-inspired weekend brunch menu at the Todd English Food Hall (not to be confused with the adjoining Plaza Food Hall) where, after a sound night's sleep, we sampled Venison Eggs Bercy and Vol au Vent of Seafood.

Once a dangerous, drug-addled spot, the plaza is today filled with picnicking families, food carts selling homemade empanadas and locals chatting over Aguila beers.

But the reborn Plaza's best dining opportunities are its subterranean Food Hall, where vendors such as Sushi of Gari, Tartinery and Luke's Lobster have come up with dishes that have a connection, however tenuous, to the Roaring '20s and the Gatsby era.

For a Berkeley-born favourite, make the trip to the historic Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on the edge of San Francisco Bay, where artisanal food vendors, organic farm stands, legendary coffee shops and a host of restaurants buzz with chatter, tasting, slurping, clanging and eating.
