The Forestry Commission employee, despite not being an trained archaeologist, has collected hundreds of items, mostly pre-historic flint tools, while doing his day job.

They include human teeth, the skull of a woolly rhinoceros, mammoth tusks and a tooth, flint tools and the antler of a giant deer.

The boat will be on display in a new gallery at the museum, which will also showcase a range of artefacts from the Portsmouth area, including Saxon jewellery and weaponry, prehistoric flint tools and a Bronze Age torc (neck ornament).

Several internal fireplace hearths were also identified and more than 1, 000 flint artefacts were found, including materials which would have been used as tools and arrowheads.
