In 1987 he joined the Royal Navy (Fleet AirArm) as a lieutenant, initially to learn to navigate helicopters, and then as an environmental expert and instructor.
The goal was a modernised fleet and airarm with complementary communications and tracking equipment, lower maintenance and better conditions for the crew.
