It signed with a consortium of companies to create a conversion facility in the UK, utilizing the FischerTropsch (FT) technology to convert gas to liquid fuels.
The technology to be utilized is the FischerTropsch process, the same technology to be used to convert landfill gas to airline fuel for British Airways starting in 2014.
What is interesting is that the conversions of biomass (e.g. switchgrass and salicornia) to synthetic diesel using Fischer-Tropsch (F-T.) and coal to liquids with F.
The air force is working to certify all its aircraft to use synthetic fuels made from gas derived from coal or biomass, using the Fischer-Tropsch method used by Germany during the second world war.
Fischer-Tropsch derived fuels for aviation have been produced recently for the Department of Defense by U.S. based Syntroleum, and have been successfully tested by the US Air Force in a B-52 jet with all eight of its engines fueled by the mixture.
