Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service pointed out the staff had firesafetyawareness training and repeated advice for members of the public not to enter a building on fire.
Mr Sanders commended the government for the work it had done to increase awareness of firesafety, but said guidelines around smoke alarms in rented properties were "somewhat lacking".
