The recent decision to reauthorize the Patriot Act, without any examination of whether it makes sense to extend some 30 onerous money-laundering provisions, guarantees that costs will continue to rise.
The prime minister wants that changed, as well as a re-examination of proposals to create a specific criminal offence covering the act of trying to force someone into marriage.
Officials also pledged legal and regulatory reforms, including amendments to the Bankruptcy Act to speed up collateral collection by creditors, tighter supervision and examination of accounts of financial institutions, and tougher disclosure requirements to promote transparency.
