Babies and children are vaccinated against pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus through a similar vaccine that's referred to as Dtap in a five-dose series during infancy and up to age 6.
They are not protected at all at that age by the DTaP, and since a huge percentage of even appropriately vaccinated people can still catch and transmit the disease, parents cannot rely on the theory that their baby is safe from the disease if exposed to them.
