The Birmingham trust questioned the credibility of figures, but Dr Foster defended its measures.
The data comes from the Dr Foster report, which is an annual assessment of England's hospitals.
Dr Foster, which works closely with the Department of Health, said its findings needed to be investigated urgently.
The Dr Foster guide measures four categories of mortality and north Cumbria was marked out for mention in two.
The findings are in the hospital guide by the research company Dr Foster.
Cumberland Infirmary and the West Cumberland Hospital were named in the Dr Foster guide as having "worryingly" high numbers of deaths.
But Dr Foster was able to narrow that group down to 12 by looking for those trusts with high rates in two categories.
There have been more than 1, 800 deaths in United Lincolnshire Hospitals than expected in the past decade, according to the government's Dr Foster research unit.
Research company Dr Foster gave Blackpool Teaching Hospitals Trust and the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust higher than average ratings for their patient death rates.
Adding to the alarm, a report by Dr Foster Intelligence, a public-private outfit that analyses health-care data, suggested that Basildon was not alone in being unsafe.
The Dr Foster Hospital Guide found the Nottinghamshire trust had a high mortality rate in one of four measures used by the private research group.
This was illustrated earlier this month by analysts Dr Foster who found that hospitals were well above the recommended safe level for much of the year.
Last year the hospital was highlighted in a report for the Dr Foster research group after the number of deaths in 2011-12 were 17% higher than expected.
Dr Foster, which works closely with the Department of Health, said death rates appeared higher than they should be in more than a quarter of trusts in England.
The issue of these hospitals was raised by Prof Sir Brian Jarman, of the Dr Foster research group, in March 2010 with the then Health Secretary Andy Burnham.
Problems at the Sherwood Forest Hospitals Trust were first highlighted last year after the Dr Foster guide to hospitals showed higher than expected mortality rates in two categories.
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust were named in the Dr Foster guide as higher than expected on two out of four mortality measures.
What the Dr Foster analysis illustrates is why the NHS struggles and how then a culture that is not conducive to what ministers like to call "patient-centred" care develops.
The trust also said its hospitals were performing well and its staff were providing a high level of care, which had been proved in the Dr Foster Guide 2012.

The trust said the Dr Foster independent investigation found that of 150 patient cases - not all fatal - coded as septicaemia, 76 were found not to meet national coding standards.
Dr Foster's study also included data on death rates.

Dr Foster, the research group he works for, looks at four key measures - deaths in hospital, deaths within 30 days of discharge, deaths after surgery and deaths among patients in low risk conditions.
Last week a report by monitoring body Dr Foster gave an insight into the difficulties hospitals are facing with overcrowding which makes providing the right care for the frail and elderly more difficult.
"The NPSA is also setting up a Patient Safety Observatory which will draw together patient safety information from different sources, including the NRLS and studies such as this one from Dr Foster, to maximise our understanding and direct our safety solutions work, " she said.
But Dr Foster medical guide editor, Alex Kafetz, said that figure was only an average and the number of patients using beds was "not particularly smooth" and more needed to be done to make sure patients who potentially should not be in hospital were cared for at home or at specialised care facilities.
