Today consider the 2007 Dodge Nitro, a small SUV introduced last fall by Chrysler.

Chrysler has plenty of gas-guzzling SUVs on the way, too, including two- and four-door versions of the iconic Jeep Wrangler, an all-new Dodge Nitro sport utility and the even larger Chrysler Aspen.

Small truck-based SUVs, like the Jeep Liberty, are holding their own because of a raft of new entries in the segment, like Toyota's FJ Cruiser, the new Dodge Nitro and the redesigned four-door Jeep Wrangler.

And so is a round of scathing reviews from auto critics, as with the Chrysler 200 Convertible, or a Consumer Reports rating that places it among the very worst values of the year (like the now-discontinued Dodge Nitro).

These include lackluster models from model years 2008 and 2009 like the Chevrolet Aveo subcompact sedan and hatchback, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger midsize sedans, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks and the Dodge Nitro and Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicles.

Chrysler has a handful of smaller-volume hopefuls, like a redesigned Chrysler Sebring sedan, a new Chrysler Aspen SUV, a small SUV for Dodge called the Nitro and a Jeep crossover called the Patriot.
