For many years UNESCO and IFLA have cooperated closely in developing information capacities of UNESCO Member States, in particular in the field of libraries, including information services with a broad scope of projects ranging for example from "Guidelines for Digitization" to "Information Literacy", and from "Preserving the African Documentary Heritage" to "Public and School Libraries in the Caribbean".

The Programme, set up by UNESCO ten years ago to preserve and promote documentary heritage, much of which is endangered, helps networks of experts to exchange information and raise resources for preservation, digitization and dissemination of documentary material.

The conference underlined the importance of industry in digitization and digital preservation and adopted a call on industry to ensure long-term accessibility to information which is contained in legacy formats.
