After reading the " Hot type" story on digital color printing (Jan. 21), I wanted to clarify some points.
The story does not mention Xerox's leadership in digital color presses.
It is in a dogfight with the financially troubled Xerox and the managerially distracted Hewlett-Packard to capture the market for color digital printers: industrial-grade, electronic presses that can churn out a run of thousands of full-color, personalized documents.
Even with the advantages, it won't be economical to do color digital printing commercially beyond 2, 000 pages.
So color digital printing won't be cheap--5 to 10 cents per page versus a fraction of a penny for offset.
Although Heidelberg dominates the traditional offset commercial printing market, Xerox leads the fast-growing digital-production color segment with a market share of 55%.
"Color digital is the key to survival in this market, " says Romano.
Stringer demonstrated "Flex OLED, " a thin, bendable, full-color digital video screen.
