Both Otto cycle(spark ignition) and Dieselcycle engines(compression ignition) engines can be made to run on multiple fuels(petroleum, ethanol, natural gas) The cost is only nominally more than single fuel engines.
Great mileage on the highway, which is where a diesel excels, and then when you get in the city cycle it'll run on the hybrid battery, which should give you excellent city mileage.
