Labour MP Neil Gerrard has tabled an amendment to the bill that would make it possible for people to apply for a passport without having to submit their details for the ID cards database.

From then on, any time the user clicks on a Web site, program or database that requires its own user ID and password, the software issues the proper credentials, all in the background, without the user having to lift a finger or remember a word.

The coalition has also announced a number of policies it says will strengthen civil liberties such as scrapping ID cards, extension of the Freedom of Information Act, more protections for the DNA database, protecting trial by jury and regulating CCTV.
