Outdoor cremations were banned in 1930, mainly because of fears that dental fillings containing mercury would release dangerous emissions into the atmosphere.
The disaster caused billions of dollars worth of damage to residential and commercial property and also damaged a nuclear reactor that was operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), sending dangerous levels of radiation out into the atmosphere.
They have shown that emissions of nitrous oxides (NOX) and sulphur oxides (SOX) combine with gases already in the atmosphere to create very fine particles that are especially dangerous to human health.
