The most common type of counterfeiting is called skimming, where the data on a card's magnetic stripe is electronically copied and used to make an illegal copy of a genuine card.
After December 2006, the law will prohibit companies from printing the expiration date or more than the last five digits of a credit or debit card on a hard copy receipt.
"This modification will help to ensure that Visa remains competitive with respect to Visa Debit card issuance, " the notice said, according to a copy reviewed by Dow Jones Newswires.
