Steady electronic "heartbeat" tones relayed from Curiosity across space to Earth indicated a successful landing to the control room at Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The dishes are then flown back to the control boat where they are sealed and taken to be analysed in alaboratory to identify particular pathogens - bacteria, viruses, fungi.
