FedEx employs contract carriers that use their own vehicles for home deliveries.

On top of that, wireless carriers are giving highly subsidized phones along with a 1-2 year contract to customers.
The carriers more than make up for the upfront subsidies over the life of the contract due to huge margins on data plans.

Carriers have also looked to reduce how much they're spending to subsidize smartphones for contract customers, in part by trying to limit how often people upgrade to new devices.
