Asher Edelman was one of the early 1980s corporate raiders, strong-arming companies like computer maker Management Assistance, real estate outfit Canal-Randolph and technology firm Mohawk Data Sciences.
The state still plans to consolidate many of its assistance services, and to enlist a contractor to overhaul the computer system to allow offices to share databases containing case information.
