The best way I know of to compare countries is via the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report.

In another recent competitiveness report Thailand ranked 54th out of 56 countries globally for English-language proficiency, the second-lowest in Asia.
Every year, the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, the same group that holds the high-powered annual meeting in Davos, publishes a Global Competitiveness Report.
So it is no surprise that the public sector is Brazil's weakest point in the World Economic Forum's latest Global Competitiveness Report, released on September 7th.
As for Venezuela, its oil money helps it earn somewhat better rankings in the "macroeconomy" and "health and primary education" sections of the Competitiveness Report, giving the country an overall rank of 88 out of 125 countries.
The Global Competitiveness Report ranks countries both on hard economic data--such as gross domestic product, inflation, government debt, country credit rating and infant mortality--and on survey opinions from over 11, 000 chief executives and other high-ranking executives in 125 countries.
France's dilemma is described in a November report on competitiveness to the French government by Louis Gallois, the former chief executive officer of EADS. Bottom line: Unlike their counterparts across the Rhine, French industrial companies have ended up in the wrong segment of the global product markets.
According to a report on national competitiveness by the World Economic Forum, the French rank and file has a much stronger work ethic than American, British or Dutch employees.
The "friendly" ranking was just one aspect of the report, analyzing each country's competitiveness in travel and tourism.
Thus, the threat to private intellectual property and economic competitiveness is most prominent among the threats identified in the report.
