Depletion of ozone is caused by extreme coldtemperatures at high altitude and the presence of ozone-destroying gases, such as chlorine and bromine, in the atmosphere, the ESA said.
As more miserable weather slams the region, those affected by Superstorm Sandy will be further hampered by high winds, coldtemperatures and more beach erosion.
And with a cold April, ski mountains in northern New England stayed open longer than last year, when record-high temperatures in March forced many to shut down.
