Yesterday, Austrian-born winemaker Rudi Bauer of the esteemed winery Quartz Reef drove me up into the hills overlooking Lake Dunstan, which cuts a large swath through the middle of the massive eastern section of Central Otago.

However, Bauer later admitted as we drove down the steep, rocky road, back into the valley, that the most important thing is to educate wine drinkers on the basics: Where New Zealand is on the world map, where Central Otago is and what wines are produced there.
