They also found that the number of livers donated after so-called cardiac deaths rose during the study period, and that those livers were more likely not to be used.
Study results have ruled out cardiac risk in men with healthy tickers, but that fact didn't garner as much attention as the deaths.
Eve Knight, from the British Cardiac Patients' Association, said the study highlighted the need for all hospitals to perform to the highest standards.
Judy O'Sullivan, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said the study added to the evidence that alcohol in moderation provides some protection for the heart.
Results of the study, which looked at mortality rates for cardiac causes for the 1980 Los Angeles Super Bowl loss and for the 1984 Los Angeles Super Bowl win, show that the Los Angeles Super Bowl loss of 1980 increased total and cardiac deaths in both men and women.
"The study helps us understand what the risk is with cardiac arrest in the marathon, and we find it's not very high at all, " said Kevin Harris, a cardiologist at the Minneapolis Heart Institute who wasn't involved in the research.
In the new study, Hausleiter and his colleagues looked at patients who underwent cardiac CT angiography at 21 university hospitals and 29 community hospitals between February and December 2007.
His team explored these risks in a 2009 study -- and found that for both men and women, the rate of cardiac deaths in Los Angeles increased following the city's Super Bowl defeat in 1980.
The findings echoed an earlier study in the European Heart Journal, which linked World Cup eliminations to a rise in cardiac events for the losing country.
In that study, researchers looked at the data from two already completed studies, the Vioxx Gastrointestinal Outcomes Research study (VIGOR) and Celecoxib Long-Term Arthritis Safety Study (CLASS), and concluded that both drugs might slightly increase the risk of cardiac events such as heart attack and stroke.
One study found that chest-pain patients who were treated aggressively -- with, say, angioplasty, cardiac bypass or sophisticated clot-busting drugs -- did better than those whose doctors took a "wait and see" approach.
