WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a high capacity IP-based technology that can be deployed as a new network or as an overlay to existing 2G and 3G wireless technologies.
The innovation announced today takes advantage of the machine-to-machine capability and expands it to other devices on the network that can receive IP based commands.
Mr. Shammo said Verizon's 4G network, which is based on technology called Long-Term Evolution, can deliver between 1 and 12 megabits per second of data, allowing for tiered pricing structure similar to home wired Internet service.
