American Electric Power agreed late Friday in federal court in Columbus, Ohio, to retire or switch to natural gas two coal-burning units at the Muskingum River powerplant in Ohio and the Tanners Creek powerplant in Indiana by the end of 2015.
In fact, government and powerplant data show that burning woody biomass releases 1.5 times as much carbon dioxide per megawatt-hour generated as coal, according to the Massachusetts Environmental Energy Alliance.
In October 2010, the British government gave the green light to building up to eight new nuclear power plants in the country, a year and a half after the nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima powerplant owned by Tokyo Electric Power caused much of the world to turn on the controversial clean burning super fuel.
We also explored several pressing environmental issues as record levels of radiation were found in fish near Japan's Fukushima nuclear powerplant and we delved into the Gates of Hell -- a burning gas crater in Turkmenistan that has been ablaze for 41 years.
