In his quest for a way to contain the bubbles produced during fermentation, and thus to make the wines from his monastery's vineyards in Champagne sparkle, he tried replacing traditional wooden bottlestoppers with new-fangled cork ones.
But few of today's imaginative ideas would have made it onto drawing boards without cork's competition from screw-top bottle caps, plastic stoppers and aluminum Tetra Paks.
