Bekker suffered a foot injury playing for the Stormers in their Super 14 final loss against rival South Africa side the Bulls - captained by Matfield - last Saturday.
Following the second of those, South Africa counter-attacked straight from the restart and Andries Bekker looked set to touch down in the corner, only for England prospect Noah Cato to bundle him into touch.
There are also a number of quality lock forwards currently involved in the Super 14 competition, including Bakkies Botha and Johann Muller, while rookie Andries Bekker of the Stormers has also been in good form.
With just one week to prepare for the Cardiff clash - and disrupted by the enforced withdrawal of the ineligible Bath back Butch James and the injured Andries Bekker - surely South Africa were ripe for the picking?
In fairness there is no better line-out operator in the world than the Bulls captain, a late call-up for this match due to Bekker's injury, but lesser Test locks have also found the Wales throw a tasty target.
