Patrick Deuchar, the hall's chief executive, says that the result will probably be the removal of the upside-down mushrooms that were hung from the roof in the 1960s, in an earlier effort to improve the hall's sound.
Traditional geopolitical relationships would be turned upside down, with such resource-poor and technology-rich countries as Israel and Japan suddenly able to achieve energy self-sufficiency, while the oil-producing dictatorships would finally have to face the consequences of decades of squandered wealth.
On closer inspection, the machinery turns out to be a trompe-l'oeil painting and the interior a mirrored image of one built upside down behind the painting.
