All three new tests will mirror the old GED in many ways: They will be five to eight hours long and cover the basicsubjects of reading, writing, math, science and history.
The six subjects include basic skills, vocational training, classes covering aspects of work and employment, artistic and cultural expression workshops, ICT and physical education and sport.
Earlier this month, Ofsted inspectors warned of the problems created when pupils start in secondary school without adequate skills in literacy and numeracy - and how a lack of these basic skills becomes a barrier to learning other subjects.
