The Welsh Bacc was introduced in 2002 to give teenagers a more rounded education.
But Labour's education spokesman Stephen Twigg backed an "A Bacc", if it had a "broad range of subjects".
There are also numerous suggestions about new A Bacc league table measures but no decisions have been made.
The Welsh government said the research by Cardiff University was commissioned to help with the development of the Welsh Bacc.

The Tech Bacc will require students to have three elements - qualifications in maths and literacy and a "high quality" vocational qualification.
The idea of a Tech Bacc has also been supported by former education ministers Labour's Lord Adonis and the Conservatives' Lord Baker.
They're planning a publicity campaign later this year to raise awareness of the new Welsh Bacc, the new qualifications system in Wales - targeted in particular at England.
The Department for Education emphasised this would not mean the end of A-levels - but the addition of an A-Bacc, which would include A-levels, as a new measure for schools.
The "Tech Bacc", launched on Monday by Mr Hancock and Education Secretary Michael Gove, is intended to reinforce the value of technical and vocational training and qualifications taken by 16 to 19-year-olds.
Under the review's recommendations, 16-year-olds will be able to gain a national level Welsh Bacc if they obtain at least five GCSEs at grades A to C and the components of the baccalaureate.
Last year, a study by the Welsh Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) also suggested undergraduates completing the Welsh Bacc fare less well at university than those who have not.

For schools and colleges, the Tech Bacc will become a league table performance measure from 2017, in the way that schools are measured by the percentage of pupils who have achieved academic English Baccalaureate subjects.
Labour's Stephen Twigg said that he supported the "concept of an A Bacc", but said that it should have a range of subjects including computing and engineering and should work alongside their proposed "Tech Bacc" for vocational courses.
It had been heavily criticised by teaching unions and some groups, especially those involved in the arts, who said it would narrow the curriculum and that fewer young people would study art and music and other non-Bacc subjects as a result of it.
Because there is a minister in Michael Gove who must equally persuade all of the above that he has made the right call, that his English Bacc knocks the Welsh Bacc into a cocked hat, that his emphasis on more challenging exams and academic rigour will deliver gold standard qualifications.
