He discovered that infants given doses of an anti-malarial drug called Fansidar along with their regular childhood vaccinations often acquired immunity to malaria.
He added that the study showed the impact of the combined HIV strategy of promoting condoms, increasing regular HIV testing and encouraging the earlier use of anti-HIV drug therapy.
Some were given a regular dose of the type of painkillers called "non-steroidal anti-inflammatories" - which include ibuprofen and aspirin, while the rest were not.
