Endometrial polyps are typically identified during the evaluation of abnormalbleeding and may be found either on ultrasound or by endometrial biopsy, an office procedure that samples the lining of the uterus.
None of these things are caused by being on the pill, but because the pill is an excellent treatment for irregular cycles the abnormalbleeding becomes apparent only once the pill is stopped.
Cervical polyps are typically removed only if they are large, causing irregular bleeding, or if there is an abnormal Pap smear or a persistently positive HPV (human papillomavirus) test.
Indeed, some experts argue that regular bleeding is a medical risk, leaving a woman open to such complications as endometriosis (abnormal growth of the uterine lining) and anaemia.
