The past day and a half since the arrival of ahistoricstorm has brought traumatic devastation lives have been lost, homes have been leveled, fires have ravaged blocks.
More than three decades before the massive storm devastated the Atlantic coast, a state law and a series of legislative reports began warning New York politicians to prepare for astorm of historic proportions that would cause the towering storm surge, overwhelming flooding and widespread power outages caused by Sandy.
The National Weather Service had earlier said the combination of two weather systems from the polar and sub-tropical jet streams would produce a "potentially historic" storm.
One of the more dramatic sights was in Matunuck, a village in South Kingstown where several beachfront dwellings at ahistoric 377-cottage summer colony were ripped apart by the storm.
