To send power miles away without huge line losses demanded that electricity be stepped up to a high voltage, then stepped down again at the receiving end.
Severinsky's bright idea was to run the electric motor on a high voltage--say, 40 times the 14 volts that is standard for the electrical system in a gasoline car with a 12-volt battery.
New focus Sharyland Utilities built a high-voltage line to connect Texas with Mexico's power grid.
The repeater is a like a high-voltage machine gun, for example, but with different upgrades and ammo.
In a 2004 corporate report Toyota said the key to the improvements was its decision to switch to a high-voltage system.
Wiens, 27, was injured in 2008 when he was volunteering at his church and his head got too close to a high-voltage power line.
Substations and transformer boxes eventually reduce the power to the 110 volts that toast your muffin in the morning, but the electrical noise on a high-voltage line can destroy data signals immediately.
We can generate clean, renewable electricity (often in low-demand regions) and get it to where it's needed by building a national smart grid to distribute clean power -- like a high-voltage Internet.
The SLS AMG E-CELL incorporates a liquid-cooled high-voltage lithium-ion battery featuring a modular design with an energy content of 48 kWh.

It is also a vital component of high-voltage wires, magnetic coatings for high-density hard disk drives, fiber optics, fiberglass, catalytic converters and spark plugs.
The fence consisted of seven or eight strands of high-voltage barbed wire, spaced about a foot apart, strung between tall poles.
It's high-voltage, high-current DC, which is not too far off of automotive electronics from a technology standpoint.

The power electronics unit integrated in the engine compartment operates at a level of around 370V and manages the flow of high-voltage energy to and from the battery and the electric motors.

Siemens is also offering high-voltage direct current technology, but ABB is a step ahead.
Outages that used to last a few hours now can drag on for the better part of a week as repair crews contend with flooding, downed trees and snapped high-voltage power lines across vast regions.
The carbon is placed next to the steel die form, and very high voltage is sent between the carbon and the steel, creating a powerful arc of heat, which vaporizes the steel in the desired pattern.
They found the voltage generated when the liposomes were exposed to light was high enough to make a nerve cell fire.
Now there is growing concern that a really big storm might collapse much of the global electric grid, particularly in places with long high-voltage transmission lines such as Australia, Canada, China and the United States.
FORBES: Intelligence Community Warns Solar Storms Could Collapse Electric Grid
Other improvements will include the running of new and some existing high voltage cables underground, particularly where they affect areas of outstanding natural beauty, and the construction of a new undersea link connecting Scotland with England and Wales.
