If Mr Barak can bring home the draft peace agreement that eluded him and Yasser Arafat at Camp David, or even a less ambitious accord, providing Palestinian statehood but leaving the issues of Jerusalem and the refugees for further negotiation, the election would become, in effect, the referendum on peace that he promised.
