最初于1976年设立时，此奖项被命名为“西区戏剧协会奖”（The Society of West End Theatre Awards）。在1984年，英国著名演员劳伦斯·奥立佛爵士同意将此奖项以他的名字来命名，其后即改名为劳伦斯·奥利弗奖。
