2004年春季，芝加哥indie pop乐队The 1900s正式成立，但该乐队的根源可追溯到10多年前。歌手兼吉他手Edward Anderson，吉他手Mike Jasinski，和鼓手Tim Minnick 在高中首次合作，玩着重金属音乐，但最终却被迫解散。安德森在2001年回到芝加哥，加入了Tim Minnick 当时的乐队——roots rock（摇滚的一类）Forty Piece Choir。但他不久便离开了该乐队，加入了后朋克乐队unit plane。但安德森依然和Minnick 、Jasinski保持密切联系，之后招募了贝斯手Charlie Ransford ，在2004年夏天，歌手Jeannie O'Toole 和Caroline Donovan加入乐队，随后又有小提琴手Kristina Dutton加入，该乐队的音乐迅速发展，融入了vintage sunshine pop 和当代民谣pop。在Bobby Conn的支持下，乐队进行了他们的第一次现场演出，被Parasol独立唱片公司一眼相中，在2006年春季首次发行EP《Plume Delivery》，并广受好评，在下半年乐队进行的小的巡回演唱会，并准备新歌。在2007年夏天，乐队仍然保持原来的阵容，且融入浪漫元素，在Lollapalooza的一个电视节目中露面，赢得了一些新乐迷。他们的第一次完整长度的专辑《Cold & Kind》，在2007年秋季由Parasol公司发行。
