在布兰妮的首张专辑录制之前，布兰妮对专辑的最初设想为雪瑞儿·可洛音乐风格，但是要更加年轻更加成人风。然而，布兰妮同意了唱片公司制作人的观点即公共的青少年风格。她飞到了斯德哥尔摩的Cheiron Studios录制了这首歌曲，这里也是布兰妮和制作人：Max Martin,Denniz Pop和Rami Yacoub在1998年3月到4月期间完成专辑大半曲目的录制地。"Sometimes"由Jörgen Elofsson进行词曲创作并由Per Magnusson和David Kreuger进行制作。1998年3月，布兰妮录制了这首歌曲。最终由Martin进行合成。这首歌曲的有声吉他是由EsbjörnÖhrwall演奏的，而低音吉他是由托马斯·林德伯格完成。键盘和编程是由Kreuger完成，额外的键盘音由Magnusson提供。背景声由Anders von Hoffsten提供。

1999年4月30日，"Sometimes"作为布兰妮首张专辑的第二支单曲发行。

歌曲在词曲创作版权寻在争议。一名叫史蒂夫·华莱士的印地安那词曲创作者，声称他于1990年创作了《sometimes》，但直到布兰妮注册歌曲版权4年后的2003年仍未注册版权。华莱士还称布兰妮已经承认他是词曲的创作者，并出示了一份声称发送自布兰妮的电子邮件，邮件上声称"I now know for a fact that you wrote ['Sometimes']. But there's nothing I can do about it. That's all I can say about it."而后来，这封电子邮件被指作假，华莱士的诉讼也于2005年10月31日被驳回。

1999年2月，布兰妮开始为"Sometimes"的MV进行排练，然而在排练期间，布兰妮的膝盖受伤了因而被迫进 行物理治疗流程。一个月后，布兰妮发表了一份声明：“我想感谢我很棒很棒的粉丝以及所有在这期间关爱和支持我的人们”，同时也表露了在1999年4月之前她无法进行MV拍摄。

最终，MV的导演是之前合作拍摄过"...Baby One More Time"的Nigel Dick。地点是加利福尼亚州马里布的天堂湾。

1999年5月6日，MV在Total Request Live上发布。
