鸟氨酸 ornithine H2NCH2CH2CH2CH（NH2）COOH，是一种碱性氨基酸。虽在蛋白质中不能找到，但存在于短杆菌酪肽、短杆菌肽S等的抗菌性肽中，另外从深山紫堇根中发现了δ-N-乙酰鸟氨酸。是由精氨酸为碱或精氨酸酶作用分解生成。
有些非蛋白氨基酸在代谢上作为重要的前体或中间产物,例如卜丙氨酸是维生素泛酸的前体,瓜氨酸(Citrulline)及鸟氨酸 (Ornithine)是合成精氨酸的前体,丫一氨基酸是动物神经传导的化学物质。
