高锰酸盐又名过锰酸盐，是指所有阴离子为高锰酸根离子（MnO4-）的盐类的总称，其中锰元素的化合价为+7价。高锰酸盐指数的测定都是以高锰酸钾为氧化剂,根据测定体系酸碱度的不同,它又可分为酸性法与碱性法(用于测定含氯离子较高的水样) ,通常采用酸性法,以下均指酸性法。测定中最主要的影响因素是高锰酸钾溶液的浓度、加热温度、加热时间、溶液的酸度以及滴定终点的判断。
