高层大气，是指地球大气开始电离（约60千米）以上的大气区域。高层大气上界的层状结构已不明显，由于收到太阳辐射的缘故，高层大气粒子速度很高，这些大气粒子有可能克服地球引力的束缚而逃离地球大气层，而宇宙空间的气体粒子也有可能进入高层大气。
这个电磁波又被高层大气（upper atmosphere）中的电离层（ionosphere）反射回到地球。短波无线电收音机能拦截这些电磁波，并从这些电磁波中引导出电压。
